The Keybara Story
The Keybara Story
As a kid, video games were my escape from the stressful and confusing real world into one where progress was simple - whether it was climbing the Rocket League ranks, filling the Pokédex, or maxing my base in Clash of Clans.
Growing up didn’t kill that itch; it just made indulging in it feel… irresponsible. The same long video game sessions that once felt like freedom started to feel like procrastination. But the craving remained: I still wanted that deep, all-absorbing zen state from my favorite childhood video games. But I also wanted to move my real life forward.
So I asked a question: what if there was something that felt like your favorite video games - but secretly leveled up a high-leverage career skill?
So I started researching, testing, and building to create an answer.
After some tinkering and late-night prototyping and playtesting, I resolved to build an immersive, simple, fun, customizable typing game.
I didn’t want another typing game that felt like homework. I wanted to create an expansive, sandbox world that pulls you in - a digital realm where you can zone in on a single goal, forget the chaos of the real world, and still walk away tangibly better at something that fuels modern work: typing.
Typing is how your ideas leave your head and show up on the screens that power our modern world. Improve your typing, and everything you do - writing, ideating, coding, messaging, researching - gets faster, cleaner, and easier.
Just take a look at the receipts:
Microsoft’s 2023 Work Trend Index found the average employee spends 57% of their time communicating in meetings, email, and chat (and the rest creating in docs/spreadsheets). Type faster, and you'll save time on all of it.
A McKinsey analysis (widely cited by HBR) shows professionals spend about 30% of the workday on email. Every extra words per minute (WPM) increase reduces that massive time tax.
Most people have TONS of room to improve. The average adult typing speed clusters around ~40 WPM, whereas an advanced typist can hit 200+ WPM. There’s massive unrealized room for gain.
For every 10,000 words you type, going from 40 to 80 WPM saves 2 hours worth of typing. Practice typing just once a day for 20 minutes, and it can save you hours each week for the rest of your life.
Faster, more accurate typing frees your cognition. Skilled typing becomes largely automatic after practice, lowering the attention cost of text entry so your brain stays on your IDEAS - not your keyboard (ScienceDirect).
Keybara is built to make typing improvement addictive through:
Immersion, clean aesthetics, zero clutter, zero confusion.
Your world, your rules: themes, word sets (including fun and niche ones), and modes that match your vibe - so you can escape to your happy place where “practice” feels like play.
Visible progress. Your WPM and accuracy always show so you can focus on driving up those numbers with each game. You can even see how fast you typed over the game run and exactly what you typed compared to what you should have typed.
Play the game at keybara.io and you'll see exactly what I mean.
In sum, Keybara delivers the childlike bliss of video games AND real-world payoff. Jump in for a minute and you'll see what I'm talking about. You might want to stay a little longer ;)
